The Fondazione Carisbo and Opera Laboratori, as part of the Genus Bononiae cultural project, are pleased to host an important exhibition promoted and produced by Associazione Genesi, dedicated to the work of Louise Nevelson (Kiev, 1899 – New York, 1988), one of the first women artists to achieve significant recognition in the contemporary art world as early as the 1940s. She is renowned for her large, monochromatic sculptures—primarily black, white, and gold—assembled from salvaged materials.
Marking the 120th anniversary of her emigration from Kiev, where she was born, to the United States, this is the first exhibition dedicated to Louise Nevelson in Bologna. It traces the evolution of one of the most original figures of the 20th century—an artist who defied the conventions traditionally imposed on women of her time and anticipated critical contemporary themes such as memory and the condition of women.
Curated by Ilaria Bernardi, the centerpiece of the exhibition will be Nevelson’s iconic large-scale sculptures in painted wood, including significant works from various sculptural cycles created during the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.
Spread across five rooms frescoed by the Carracci on the piano nobile of Palazzo Fava, the exhibition is the first to categorize Nevelson’s work by recurring thematic and structural typologies, offering visitors a foundational vocabulary for understanding her artistic language.
Main Sponsors: Eni and Intesa Sanpaolo.
The exhibition is organised in collaboration with the Marconi Foundation in Milan, with the support of Heritage and the Pirelli Foundation.
